Call to Worship
A: Bless God for the good we have been given.
Praise God who crowns the year with abundance.
C: We are thankful for the bounty we have enjoyed.
God has been good to us through another year.
God chooses to love us and draw us near.
God invites us to enjoy the good all around us.
We are grateful for food, shelter, and family.
God enriches our lives with many opportunities.
Let us renew our vows to God in this time.
May thanksgiving overflow with acts of kindness.
We are here to remember and find renewal.
We have come to listen to God’s Word.
Gathering Song “We Praise You, O God” # 870
Greeting
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
Just as they are about to enter Canaan – The Promised Land – Moses reminds the Israelites that they must always remember that thankfulness for all the abundance that they receive is expressed through obedience to God’s will.
A reading from Deuteronomy, the 8th chapter.
… The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. 10You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that God has given you.
11 Take care that you do not forget the Lord your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you today. 12When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them, 13and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, 14then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid waste-land with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, 16and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. 17Do not say to yourself, ‘My power and the might of my own hand have gained me this wealth.’ 18But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today.
Word of God. Word of Life.
Thanks be to God!
Psalm 100 (read together responsively by half-verse)
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
come into God’s presence with a song.
Know that the Lord is God, our maker to whom we belong;
we are God’s people and the sheep of God’s pasture.
Enter the gates of the Lord with thanksgiving and the courts with praise;
give thanks and bless God’s holy name.
Good indeed is the Lord, whose steadfast love is everlasting,
whose faithfulness endures from age to age.
Gospel Acclamation (sung together)
Alleluia, Lord to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Gospel
The holy gospel according to Luke, the 17th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ 14When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ 19Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
Hymn of the Day “Now Thank We All Our God” # 840
- Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;
who, from our mothers’ arms, has blest us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
- Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us,
and keep us all in grace, and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all harm in this world and the next.
- All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
the Son, and Spirit blest, who reign in highest heaven,
the one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore;
for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
Creed
P: We are made God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, let us confess our faith:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father;
he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen
Prayers
Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
P: Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord who teaches us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen
Announcements may be made.
Benediction
O give thanks unto the Lord for he is good.
for God’s mercy endureth forever.
May thanksgiving enhance the joys you experience,
may thanksgiving transcend the pains you suffer,
may thanksgiving sweeten the duties you must perform,
may thanksgiving underpin even the griefs you bear.
And may the love of God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit –
bless you and keep you now and forever.
Amen!
Sending Hymn Let All Things Now Living # 881
- Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving
To God the creator triumphantly raise,
Who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,
Who still guides us on to the end of our days.
God’s banners are o’er us, God’s light goes before us,
A pillar of fire shining forth in the night,
‘Till shadows have vanished and darkness is banished,
As forward we travel from light into light.
- God rules all the forces: the stars in their courses
And sun in its orbit obediently shine;
The hills and the mountains, the rivers and fountains,
The deeps of the ocean proclaim God divine.
We too should be voicing our love and rejoicing;
With glad adoration a song let us raise
‘Till all things now living unite in thanksgiving:
“To God in the highest, hosanna and praise!”
