10. SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

August 14, 2022

Gathering

Welcome and Land Acknowledgement:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Call to Worship: Come Let Us Worship God (Call and Response)

Confession and Forgiveness:

God of Wisdom,

we confess the foolishness of our ways,

and our failure to follow you in your paths of right relationships –

with you and with others.

We have gone astray; we feel lost.

We have upheld our own interests first, to the detriment of others.

We have failed to be generous with the poor,

and abandoned our efforts to bring about justice.

We feel the strain of our struggle, God.

have mercy on us according to your steadfast love.

Wash us anew

and help us to live more faithfully.

We seek your unfailing Holy Spirit

and ask for your guiding hand on our lives.

You are the immortal, invisible One;

to you be honour and glory forever; amen.

Gathering Hymn: Shine Jesus Shine ELW# 671

Prayer of the Day:

Let us pray together the prayer of the day,

O God, You love justice and hate oppression, and you call us to share your zeal for truth. Give us courage to take our stand with all victims of bloodshed and greed, and, following your servants and prophets, to look to the pioneer of our faith, your son, Jesus Christ, our saviour and Lord. Amen

Word

First Reading: Hebrews 11:29 36, 12:1-2

Response to Reading: Word of God, Word of life, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 82 (Read Responsively)

God has taken his place in the divine council;
    in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
“How long will you judge unjustly
    and show partiality to the wicked?
Give justice to the weak and the orphan;
    maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute.

Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

They have neither knowledge nor understanding;
    they walk around in darkness;
    all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
    for all the nations belong to you!

Gospel Acclamation: Halle, Halle, Hallelujah ELW#172

Gospel: Luke 12:49-56

Response: Glory to you, O Lord.

Response to Reading: The Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon:

Hymn of the Day: Blowin’ in The Wind

How many roads must a man walk down, before you can call him a man?

How many seas must a white dove sail, before she sleeps in the sand?

How many times must the cannonball fly, before they’re forever banned?

(refrain)

The answer my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.

The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

How many times must a man look up, before he can see the sky?

How many ears must one man have, before he can hear people cry?

How many deaths will it take til he knows, that too many people have died? (refrain)

How many years can a mountain exist, before it is washed to the sea?

How many years can some people exist, before they’re allowed to be free?

How many times can a man turn his head pretending he just doesn’t see? (Refrain)

Apostle’s Creed: P.127

Prayers of Intercession:

Response to “Lord in your Mercy:” Hear Our Prayer.

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father in Heaven hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom Come, your will be done, On Earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive, those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

Now and forever, Amen.

Thanksgiving for the Word

Song of Thanksgiving: Pass It On – Verse 1

It only takes a spark, to get a fire going.

And soon all those around, will warm up in its glowing.

That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it.

You spread his love, to everyone,

You want to pass it on.

Thanksgiving for the Word:

… For your Word that sustains the earth, we thank you, O God.

We thank you, O God.

… For your Word in our Lord Christ, we praise you, O God.

We praise you, O God.

… For your Word in our lives, we entreat you, O God.

We entreat you, O God.

Sending

Sending Hymn: Lord of The Dance

  1. I danced in the morning when the world was begun,

and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun.

and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth

at Bethlehem I had my birth.

(Chorus)

Dance, dance, wherever you may be.

I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.

and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be

and I’ll lead you all in the dance said he.

  • I danced for the scribe and the pharisee

but they would not dance, and they wouldn’t follow me.

I danced for the fisherman, for James and John

They came with me and the dance went on (Chorus)

  • I danced on the sabbath and I cured the lame

The holy people said, it was a shame

They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high

and they left me there on the cross to die (Chorus)

  • They cut me down and I leapt up high

I am the life that’ll never, never die

I’ll live in you, if you’ll live in me

I am the lord of the dance, said he. (Chorus)

Dismissal:

A: We journey with Christ, Go in Peace, share the Good News!

Thanks be to God, Alleluia.

NEWS FROM FAITH’S SEWING GROUP:

The sewing group welcomes all who like to sew and socialize.  We meet in the church basement on Tuesdays from 9am to 1 pm.  If you are interested, please drop by or call the Church Office. This group will once again provide a blanket to the MISSON TO SEAFARERS, a ministry to the sailors who are miles away from home.  It is organized by a former intern at Faith, Dan Phannenhour. This year, we hope that the congregation at Faith can also help by donating warm winter clothing which will be delivered to the Hamilton Seaport.  Donations can be brought to the church from now up to Thanksgiving.  For more information about this ministry, please go to their website: Mission of Seafarers of Southern Ontario (www.MTSSO.org)
