ANNOUNCEMENTS Rita Hamilton

Gathering Hymn: Will you come and follow me. ELW 798 vs. 1-4

  1. “Will you come and follow me if I but call

Your name? Will you go where you don’t

Know and never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown, will you let my

Name be known, will you let my life be

Grown in you and you in me?”

  • “Will you leave yourself behind if I but call

Your name? Will you care for cruel and

Kind and never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare, should your life at-

Tract or scare? Will you let me answer

Pray’r in you and you in me?”

  • “Will you let the blinded see if I but call

Your name? Will you set the pris’ners

Free and never be the same?

Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as

This unseen, and admit to what I

Mean in you and you in me?”

  • “Will you love the you you hide if I but call

Your name? Will you quell the fear in-

Side and never be the same?

Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the

World around, through my sight and touch and

Sound in you and you in me?”

Kyrie: p. 184.  Jane – Announce that we will sing this together in unison without a leader this week.

Refrain: Kyrie Eleison, on our world and on our way,

Kyrie Eleison, every day.

Prayer of the Day: Jane Weeden

God of the way,

Ruler of all hearts, you call our names and favour us with true freedom.

May your spirits presence be with us always so that we may leave behind all that hinders us and follow steadfastly along your paths.

Through Jesus Christ our saviour.

Amen.

Word

First Reading: Galatians 5:1,13-18 Bill Neeb

Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.

13-15 It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom. If you bite and ravage each other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then?

16-18 My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are contrary to each other, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?

Bill: “Word of God, Word of Life”… C. Thanks be to God

Psalm: 16 (Read Responsively) Bill

Song of Trust and Security in God

Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;

    I have no good apart from you.”

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;

    You hold my lot.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

    I have a goodly heritage.

I bless the Lord, who gives me counsel;

    In the night also my heart instructs me.

I keep the Lord always before me;

    Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;

    My body also rests secure.

You show me the path of life.

    In your presence there is fullness of joy;

    In your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Bill: “Please rise as you are able for the Gospel acclamation found on page 188”

Gospel Acclamation: p.188

Alleluia. Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Luke 9:51-62 Bill Neeb

 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to prepare for his arrival, but they did not receive him because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them.  Then they went on to another village.

 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”  And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”  And Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” And Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The gospel of the Lord.  Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon: GlenWillmot (Introduce Hymn After)

Hymn of the Day: O master let me walk with you ELW 818 vs. 1,3,4

1 O Master, let me walk with you

In lowly paths of service true;

Tell me your secret; help me bear

The strain of toil, the fret of care.

3 Teach me your patience; share with me

A closer, dearer company,

In work that keeps faith sweet and strong,

In trust that triumphs over wrong,

4 In hope that sends a shining ray

Far down the future’s broad’ning way,

In peace that only you can give;

With you, O Master, let me live.

Thanksgiving for the Word

Canticle of Thanksgiving: p.219

Thanksgiving for the Word: Jane

Almighty God,

we thank you for the gift of your holy word.

May it be a lantern to our feet,

a light upon our paths,

and a strength to our lives.

Take us and use us

to love and serve all people

The Word of life which was from the beginning

we proclaim to you.

The darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining;

the Word of life which was from the beginning.

That which we heard, which we saw with our eyes,and touched with our hands,

we proclaim to you.

For our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

 The Word of life, which was from the beginning, we proclaim to you.

Amen

Sending Hymn: This is my father’s world ELW 824

1 This is my Father’s world,

And to my list’ning ears

All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;

His hand the wonders wrought.

2 This is my Father’s world;

The birds their carols raise;

The morning light, the lily white,

Declare their maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world;

He shines in all that’s fair.

In the rustling grass I hear him pass;

He speaks to me ev’rywhere.

3 This is my Father’s world;

Oh, let me not forget

That, though the wrong seems oft so strong,

God is the ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world;

Why should my heart be sad?

The Lord is king, let the heaven ring;

God reigns, let the earth be glad!

Dismissal: Jane Weeden

A: The spirit is with you always, Go in Peace, share the Good News!

Thanks be to God, Alleluia.
